One Doesn’t Have to be Hypnotized to be Hypnotized

“We are all hypnotized all the time,” says hypnotherapist Stephen LaFevers. “Hypnosis is not some mysterious state that only special people can take advantage of. It is a natural state that occurs in each of us several times a day. The trick is learning how to put that naturally occuring state to use and how to make it more effective.
“Have you ever been in a room when someone yawned and found that within a few minutes, many other people were yawning too? That’s hypnosis without hypnotizing.” LaFevers book, New Age Guide to Hypnotherapy, Hypnosis in Healthcare, teaches hypnotherapy and techniques that allow for giving hypnotic suggestings without going through the hypnotic process.
“Hypnotherapy is using hypnosis to help people,” says the author, a 30 plus year veteran of hypnosis and a Registered Nurse Practitioner. “Hypnosis is easy to learn and use, but it is even easier to use hypnotic techniques to bring about desired change without hypnotizing the subject.”
Although aimed at people in the healthcare field, LaFevers book is easily understood by anyone and teaches traditional hypnosis as well as what he calls ‘waking’ hypnosis. It gives several examples and scripts for helping people with a variety of problems.
“Chronic and acute pain, arthritis, phobias, habits, skin conditions…a wide variety of conditions can be positively affected using suggestion,” he said. “And anyone can easily learn to use the techniques. Anton Mesmer, the first hypnotherapist, didn’t even know he was using hypnosis and he was very effective. Think how much more effective a person can be who understands what he is doing. That’s what this book is all about.”
LaFevers is a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Registered Hypnotherapy Instructor who has worked in family practice and emergency care for more than 30 years. He is co-author of Pre-hospital Care for the EMT-Intermediate and author of Dreams of April Ten a medical thriller.

Hypnotherapist Backs California’s New Hands-Free Phone Law for Drivers

As of July 1st, 2008, California drivers may be ticketed for driving while holding a telephone to their ear and talking. There’s a lot of controversy about the new law. Some people note that it doesn’t forbid more complicated tasks that involve taking at least one eye off the road as well as a hand: dialing and text messaging, for example. They think the law should go further.
Others are outraged at the rather arbitrary infringement of their right to bear cell phones. They point to other common LA traffic phenomena, including drivers applying makeup, eating or even slapping their kids in the back seat. Why pick on cell users, they wonder.
Hypnotherapist Stephanie Voss of Los Angeles has an unusual perspective on the new law:
“Drivers need to have both hands on the wheel is because that position is an anchor, a physical reminder that they’re driving. Even if you’re chatting away, if your hands are at the 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock positions, you feel like you’re driving. On the other hand, if you’re sitting with one hand up to your ear, you’re in a position that signals you to focus on conversation.
The body-mind connection is gaining acceptance in both the medical and psychological counseling communities. For example, hypnotherapy helps people stop smoking cigarettes by breaking long-established links between the act of lighting up and the sense of being relaxed, even though nicotine is a stimulant. Safe driving is a topic that often comes up at the end of a hypnosis session, Voss adds. When clients leave the Voss Hypnotics office in Eagle Rock, the hypnotherapist always suggests they take a walk around the parking lot before getting in their cars.
“I’m right off the Pasadena Freeway,” Voss says, “My clients drive here, then they experience hypnosis, which often puts them in a deeply relaxed state. It’s great for healing and for changing old behavior patterns, but it’s not meant for driving.” In fact, a phenomenon sometimes called “highway hypnosis” is one of the examples Voss uses when introducing hypnosis on her website, www.VossHypnotics.com.
“Hypnosis is a natural state everyone has experienced,” the website explains, “Classic examples include ‘road hypnosis’ – when you arrive at work or school but don’t remember the details of the trip.” Autopilot may kick in occasionally, but if you find yourself depending on it, you may be chronically overloaded.
Modern society has a lot of people turning to hypnotherapy to handle stress and learn relaxation. “Here’s an easy tip,” laughs Stephanie Voss, “let yourself enjoy doing one thing at a time. Britney Spears Caught Using Hypnotic Selling in TV Ad

Austin, TX Pop-singer Britney Spears may be using forbidden “Hypnotic Selling” methods in her TV commercial promoting her new fragrance, “Curious”, claims marketing expert Dr. Joe Vitale.
“Her ad plays on sexuality, mystery, and curiosity,” explains Vitale, President of Hypnotic Marketing, Inc., in Austin, Texas, and a a specialist on hypnotic persuasion methods. He adds, “Even the name of her product invokes the most powerful motivator of all: Curiosity.”
Spears announced her new product at Macy’s in New York City on September 14th. She’s being paid an estimated $ 12 million to promote the Elizabeth Arden product.

Vitale says the TV commercial featuring Spears begins with images that seem to be a soap opera, but then quickly become a forbidden intimacy fantasy come to life. The ad almost dares you to buy the perfume, he adds.
“People begin watching the commerical because they are attracted to the unknown,” explains Vitale. “They’re not sure who the cute woman is, or what she is doing. Their minds are being drawn in. Then, when they learn that it is for a new perfume, the name of it gets lodged in the brain, almost without your thinking about it. This is truly hypnotic.”
Hypnosis has been used for pain management for more than a hundred years, and was accepted by the American Medical Association back in the 1950s. But using hypnotic technigues in selling is new.
“Anything that can get a message into your mind will be tried by advertisers,” says Vitale, who uses what he calls Ethical Hypnosis in selling.
“When is it manipulation and when is it persuasion is the real question,” asks Vitale, a certified hypnotherapist as well as author of such books as “Hypnotic Writing.”

Massachusetts House of Representatives Honors Hypnotists Guild for Role in Legislation and Awareness

The House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has honored The National Guild of Hypnotists for fifty-six years of, “leading the movement for legislative and public recognition of hypnotism/hypnotherapy as a separate and distinct profession in the healing arts.” According to a proclamation signed by the President of the Massachusetts State Senate, Robert E. Travaglini, “In recognition of your dedication in advancing the art, science and philosophy of hypnotism” the week of August 5-11, 2007, has been proclaimed, “National Guild of Hypnotists Week”.
Throughout its fifty-six year history, the National Guild of Hypnotists has worked to, “provide an open forum for the free exchange of ideas and to actively pursue due recognition of the importance of hypnotism for mankind,” a fact noted by the 103d United States Congress and recorded in the Congressional Record.
The National Guild of Hypnotists helped establish the National Federation of Hypnotists Local 104, chartered by OPEIU, AFL/CIO, CLC in 1994. Among their many commitments to supporting fair and just legislation, the NGH has provided support to groups seeking to pass a Complementary and Alternative Medicine Freedom of Access Law in Florida and in California in 2002; in Georgia and in Iowa in 2003; and since then in other states and on the national level.
By the year 2000, the NGH core curriculum for certification as a hypnotist had been translated into Chinese, Danish, Dutch, French, Spanish and Polish. The original curriculum, launched in 1991, has also been expanded to include specialized certification training in forensic hypnosis, pediatric hypnotism, emergency hypnotism, complementary medical hypnotism, sports hypnotism, clinical hypnotism and hypno-coaching.
The 2007 NGH Convention is the twentieth year the Hypnotists Guild has held a convention, educational conference and exhibition for its members. It is the third consecutive year the NGH Convention will be held in Marlborough, MA. Previous convention cities have included Nashua, NH, New York City and Danvers, MA. The City of Marlborough is honoring the NGH by proclaiming August 11, 2007 as National Guild of Hypnotists Day in Marlborough, MA. In a proclamation signed by Mayor Nancy E. Stevens, the City recognizes that, “Members (of the National Guild of Hypnotists) from across the US and over fifty-five countries convene annually at what has become the world’s largest Hypnosis Convention and Educational Conference.”
The NGH Convention is open to hypnotism professionals and anyone with a sincere interest in learning more about hypnosis or careers in hypnotism and related fields that utilize hypnotism.
