They use a unique approach among computer driven visual subliminal message programs – that of a solo or dedicated program with an Activator Phrase (TM). Users run the DSPP programs as stand-alone sessions, not continuous displays over running applications such as a browser or word processor. Thompson adds that the dedicated approach is essential to the programs’ ability to stimulate brain waves. “To stimulate alpha and theta brain waves – the relaxation and imagination response – the user must be free of distractions and in an emotionally neutral environment. This is only possible when the subliminal message program runs by itself. It takes the user away from the ongoing concerns of daily life and gives then a quiet place of introspection that opens the unconscious to suggestion – like the positive effects of meditation.”
Each DSPP program has a targeted Activator Phrase (TM). The phrase – similar to a post-hypnotic suggestion – is built into the subliminal messages. At any time, no matter what users are doing, whenever they say, read, see, or think their Activator Phrase(TM), it automatically recalls the positive subliminal messages of their program.
The programs run on Windows and Macintosh computers. Users launch the program, see an introduction screen, preview subliminal messages and start their session. The screen displays an emotionally neutral abstract animation that stimulates the brain to generate alpha and theta brain waves while subliminal messages flash on screen within the focal area of the eye, directly addressing the unconscious mind. Specific subliminal messages deliver the Activator Phrase(TM). The session automatically ends after 15 minutes. Users can start a new session, or exit the program.
15-year Boston area hypnotherapist, John Murray has guided and advised the development of each DSPP program to ensure they blend the best hypnosis, self-hypnosis and subliminal messaging techniques. As in hypnosis, the subliminal messages are full sentences targeted at the topic of each program. In the Smoke Free program, messages include: “I am very happy to be living smoke free.” and “I forget to smoke cigarettes.” These messages are more effective than short, general ones, such as “I am happy.”
Thompson explains, “The phrase, ‘I am happy’, is not an affirmation. It doesn’t motivate because it has no target or conditions. Our DSPP programs use full sentence messages to indicate clearly the conditions under which the affirmations apply. This targets the behavioral change and prevents associative dissonance.”
