One Doesn’t Have to be Hypnotized to be Hypnotized

“We are all hypnotized all the time,” says hypnotherapist Stephen LaFevers. “Hypnosis is not some mysterious state that only special people can take advantage of. It is a natural state that occurs in each of us several times a day. The trick is learning how to put that naturally occuring state to use and how to make it more effective.
“Have you ever been in a room when someone yawned and found that within a few minutes, many other people were yawning too? That’s hypnosis without hypnotizing.” LaFevers book, New Age Guide to Hypnotherapy, Hypnosis in Healthcare, teaches hypnotherapy and techniques that allow for giving hypnotic suggestings without going through the hypnotic process.
“Hypnotherapy is using hypnosis to help people,” says the author, a 30 plus year veteran of hypnosis and a Registered Nurse Practitioner. “Hypnosis is easy to learn and use, but it is even easier to use hypnotic techniques to bring about desired change without hypnotizing the subject.”
Although aimed at people in the healthcare field, LaFevers book is easily understood by anyone and teaches traditional hypnosis as well as what he calls ‘waking’ hypnosis. It gives several examples and scripts for helping people with a variety of problems.
“Chronic and acute pain, arthritis, phobias, habits, skin conditions…a wide variety of conditions can be positively affected using suggestion,” he said. “And anyone can easily learn to use the techniques. Anton Mesmer, the first hypnotherapist, didn’t even know he was using hypnosis and he was very effective. Think how much more effective a person can be who understands what he is doing. That’s what this book is all about.”
LaFevers is a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Registered Hypnotherapy Instructor who has worked in family practice and emergency care for more than 30 years. He is co-author of Pre-hospital Care for the EMT-Intermediate and author of Dreams of April Ten a medical thriller.
