De Rodriguez should know. If the school of hard knocks could elect a valedictorian, he would win by a landslide. The biracial child of an alcoholic family in 1950s America, De Rodriguez spent the first eighteen years of his life searching for the pill that would allow him to escape the slow torture of his existence. Drugs, incest, abuse, and a codependent relationship with his suicidal mother took De Rodriguez to the brink of his own death more than once.
Then, in his late teens, he had a spiritual revelation. Within twenty-four hours, De Rodriguez quit smoking, drinking, and doing drugs. But this was not enough to quiet the deafening dialogue of self-hatred and shame that had haunted him his entire life. De Rodriguez traveled to India and began studying meditation under a Sikh known as a “Perfect Living Master.” After living in northern India intermittently for eighteen years, De Rodriguez returned to North America permanently, burning with the desire to bring hope and healing to a spiritually ill society.
In the mid eighties, De Rodriguez aligned with his cohorts to launch the first HIV/AIDS support organization in San Diego. Through his work with the AIDS community, he discovered Neuro Linguistic Programming, a relatively new technology developed to help people overcome patterns of pain and suffering and ultimately reach their highest potential. De Rodriguez had uncovered his gift, and his prayer to effect change in a world desperate for healing had finally been answered.
“Heaven or Hell happens between the ears,” says De Rodriguez. “To find Heaven you must stop worshipping at the temple of your story—of your past—and focus on where you want to go in the future. In developed nations, mental health disorders are reaching epidemic proportions. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression will rank second only to heart disease as the world’s most crippling health problem. Rodriguez knows that North American society has the ability to turn this around, “but it will not happen en masse,” he says. “It will be through the ripple effects of intention and education in the personal change technologies such as NLP. These technologies for personal and professional expansion were not available to previous generations, but they are readily available to individuals and professionals alike today. We now have the ability to heal spiritual wounds and shield our planet and ourselves from the darker days that may lie ahead.”
